An unpublished issue naming Zeus Kapetolios
Lot 1492
ASIA MINOR. Uncertain. Nero, as Caesar, 50-54. 1/3 Assarion (?) (Bronze, 13 mm, 2.11 g, 12 h). NЄPΩ-NA Bare head of Nero to right. Rev. KAΠЄT[Ω]-ΛIO Zeus Kapetolios seated left, holding patera (?) in his right hand and long scepter in his left. RPC I -. Apparently unpublished and of great interest. Very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

This highly intriguing coin bears no ethnic designation, featuring only the name of the emperor and the epithet Kapetolios. It depicts Jupiter Capitolinus, who, in the interpretatio Graeca, becomes Zeus Kapetolios. While the coin is certainly of Asia Minor origin, the lack of a city name prevents a more precise identification. It was perhaps minted by a cult precinct.
